City Guide - Cochin
Introduction: Formerly known as Kochi, Cochin is a lively city situated on the south west coast of the Indian peninsula in the scenic and progressive state of Kerala. Cochin is the arguably the ideal starting point for visiting the immeasurable diversity and beauty of Kerala. This lovely seaside city is covered on two sides by the Western Ghats and the Arabian Sea. Since it is near the equator, it has moderate equatorial climate throughout the year. Over the years, Cochin has developed as the commercial and industrial capital of Kerala and is perhaps the second most important city on the west coast of India.
History: Like many other cities in India, Cochin has a very long and rich history. But, the origin of the name is still clouded in mystery. Some historians believe that Cochin is a modified form of the word 'Cochazhi' which means 'small sea' in Malayalam. Others are of the opinion that 'Cochin' was named so by the Chinese. According to them, traders from the court of the Chinese ruler Kublai Khan gave Cochin the name of their homeland. This is believed because many strange Chinese fishing nets have been found here, the only place outside China where they have been found. Places of interest: The Chinese Fishing Nets (Cheenavala) are very unique to Cochin. It is believed that traders from the court of the Chinese ruler Kublai Khan introduced these nets here. Oddly, these nets are found only in Cochin, outside China. Many fishermen earn their livelihood by fishing using these massive nets. A stroll along the Fort Koch Beach, particularly at sunset with the Chinese fishing nets and sailing ships in the background, is a memorable experience. Many European style bungalows can be seen along the coast. The coastal stretch has loads of small stalls, which make on demand delicious cuisines using freshly caught fish. Tourist Information: Cochin, the Queen of Arabian Sea, is a seaside town just 10 degrees north of the equator. Hence, it is a moderately hot and humid place round the year. The best time to visit Cochin is between December to February when the weather is cool and pleasant. The strategic location and commercial importance of Cochin has led to an extensive travel network linking it to rest of the country and world by air, rail and road transport. Cochin boasts of its world-class international airport with regular flights to major cities of India. |
